The chimera symbolizes the fusion of identities and captures the essence of the in-between. By layering various media like paint and plaster on surfaces such as paper and canvas, these works reflect the complexity of the human psyche. The chimera acts as a bridge, inviting viewers to explore their multifaceted existence and emphasizing the transformative journey and power of the unseen.

From earliest memory, I have obsessively contemplated the nature of being, love & potential. Potential in terms of how one is or may be in the world. As a child who had a queer perspective & parents who displayed atypical gender roles, the idea of a binary of she/he did not cause disturbance. What did disturb was the constant assumption that socially assigned behaviors & expectations based on some bits of flesh one could locate approximately 2/3s of the way down one’s body could dictate this potential expression, the nature of being & the possibility of love. And – that somehow those assignations & expectations are innate. This, I think, is pure pravarication… We are all pure potential.

IIn these pieces, I used mixed media on paper to explore the feelings surrounding the loving and complex relationship between myself and my father in the year after his death. Wrapped in grief and joy, I soaked myself in the feelings and poured them onto the paper. Mixed media on paper felt like the perfect medium to convey this complexity, with its strength, delicacy, and ephemeral nature—serving as a beautiful metaphor for human life.

Where the Trickster meets the heart.

This work examines the internalization of the patriarchal male gaze and its impact on self-image, similar to the concept of internalized homophobia. It portrays the inner struggle of trying to express power through sexuality while avoiding being objectified. The focus is on reclaiming the power that comes from vulnerability, free from shame, and shifting the gaze from the viewer to the subject being viewed.
